Smiles Delivered!
A team of five dentists and four assistants arrived in Addis Ababa with 44 bags, ready for a week of serving Adera families and students. It was incredible to witness these professionals use their expertise to bring brighter smiles and better oral health to so many. In total, we were able to assess 150 people and treat 125 moms and children.
Leading up to the trip, the challenges we faced were a clear sign that God was preparing something great for the Adera community. Visa issues posed a significant hurdle, but the Lord cleared the way. Although the visa process in Addis took longer than expected, the team waited patiently and eventually secured the final three visas. At baggage claim, we were blessed to receive all 44 bags containing dental supplies, 250 pounds of curriculum, and 187 “pack a packs” from generous sponsors. Getting everything through customs felt like an act of grace from God.
Once in action, the dental team worked tirelessly to assess, treat, and educate families. They pulled teeth, restored smiles, and shared essential dental care knowledge. Even with intermittent power outages, the team remained unfazed. We are especially grateful for the use of Dr. Amru’s office, which provided a safe and sterile environment for patient care. We hope to maintain this valuable partnership so that Adera families can continue receiving dental care from Dr. Amru and his team.
We were also joined by a third-year dental student and a talented hygienist, both of whom enriched the experience and contributed significantly to the team’s efforts.
One story that stood out involved a young mother who had lost her two front teeth and was too self-conscious to smile or speak openly. Debbie Shroyer gently evaluated her situation, and soon after, prosthodontist James Fischer offered his expertise. He took impressions and plans to create a removable bridge back in the U.S., which Elias will deliver to her in October. Her joy at the thought of regaining her smile was truly moving. While we cannot do everything for everyone, we can do something meaningful for someone.
Thank you to everyone for the love and support that made this mission possible!
